Aino Aalto
January 25, 1894 was the day Aino Aalto was born in the Finnish capital Helsinki. Even though the name may not have meant anything to anyone at the time, today she is a world-renowned designer. Aalto studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology and graduated at the age of 26. Four years later, in 1924, she was hired by the architect Alvar Aalto to come work for him. Aino and Alvar fell in love and that same year they married each other, followed by a beautiful honeymoon in Italy.
In 1935, Aalto and her husband founded the Artek brand. They sold textiles, furniture and glass, among other things. In 2005, this company was merged withIittala. Aalto had long been well acquainted with this brand. In fact, in 1932 theIittala Aino Aalto glasses with the well-known circles came on the market. These circles represent the circles that form in a water surface when you throw stones into it. She received a gold medal for this collection at the Triennial in Milan in 1936.
