German designer Hermann Gretsch was born in Stuttgard on Nov. 17, 1895. After studying architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgard, Hermann passed his companion examination in 1923. From 1930 he held a management position at the Stuttgard State Trade Office and worked at the Association of German Designers.
That same year, Gretsch began working for the porcelain factory of Arzberg. Here he remained artistic director until his death. He was a member of the NSDAP and in 1935 took over the leadership of the Gleichgeschaltet Deutscher Werkbund from Carl Christoph Lörcher. In 1940 he became Reich Commissioner of the German contribution to the
VII Triënalle in Milan.
After 1945 he settled in Stuttgard as a freelance architect and led the new start of the porcelain factory Arzberg.
