    Ettore Sottsass

    Ettore Sottsass was born in 1917 in Innsbruck, Austria. In the second half of the 1930s, he studied architecture at Turin Technical College. During his college career, he authored articles on interior design and art with Turin-based designer Luigi Spazzapan.

    But then World War II breaks out and Sottsass must enter the Italian armies, little else is known about this period in Sottsass's life. However after the end of the war we hear from Sottsass again when he is working with Giuseppe Pagano with a group of architects. After 2 years, Ettore opens his own studio called Studio in Milan. In 56 he works briefly for George Nelson at his design office.

    A year later, Sottsass becomes the artistic director of Poltronova partly because of Ettore, Poltronova manages to position itself as avant-garde in the Italian design world. Only a year later, Sottsass goes to work as a design consultant at Olvetti after which, another year later, he earns the Compasso dOro for his distinctive qualities in the field of industrial design. Ettore decides to travel, when he returns from India in 1961 he makes products based on Oriental forms for a long time.

    In 1981 Ettore founds the Memphis designer group with other designers, in the same year he founded with the same group, including: Metteo Thun, Marco Zanini and Aldo Cibic, he founded the design firm Sottsass Associati.

    Sottsas' work ranges from intereurs, to jewelry for Cleto Munrai to work for Alessi and tableware for Swid Powel.

    Exhibitions featuring Sottsass' work have been held in Venice, Paris, Sydney, Jerusalem, Barcelona and Berlin, among others. In addition, he has been a frequent guest speaker at various universities.
