Matti Klenell
Swedish designer Matti Klenell was born in Gothenburg in 1972. He was the son of a glass artist. He now lives and works in Stockholm. He studied at the University college of Arts (Konstfack) in Stockholm in 1994-1999 and at the Architect School in Copenhagen in 1997.
In 2010, he designed for Iittala the Birds by Klenell series. The inspiration for this came from a magpie. These birds are known for stealing jewelry and other shiny objects and hiding them in their nests. Glass is a familiar material to him. Klenell sees each project as a unique journey.
Despite his young age, he has already won many awards such as the prestigious Ljunggren Design Prize in 2003 and was named designer of the year in his native Sweden. His work has been exhibited in the permanent collection of several museums such as the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm, Museum of Design & Applied Arts in Gardabaer, Iceland and Museum of Värmland , Karlstad, Sweden. In addition to glass, he also designs furniture and lighting.
