What is a percolator?

Chances are you have heard of a percolator, but what exactly is it? A percolator is a kitchen appliance that allows you to brew coffee with ground coffee and water. Exactly how it works is explained below. Percolators have been around since the 18th century, but they declined in popularity in the 1970s. After all, that's when electric coffee makers emerged that made making coffee a lot easier. Still, the percolator has made a comeback in recent years. This is not entirely without reason, as making coffee with a percolator offers an authentic experience. In addition, the coffee is very tasty.

How does a percolator work?

The percolator makes strong, delicate coffee with a deep flavor through steam pressure. A percolator is not specifically designed to make espresso which many people often think.

This is how a percolator works

  • Fill the water reservoir. When you unscrew the bottom you will first encounter the filter. Take it out before putting water in. Make sure the water level in the percolator never rises above the valve.
  • Fill the filter with ground coffee. Make sure the filter is well filled and smooth the coffee well.
  • Place the filter back into the water reservoir and carefully screw the percolator back together.
  • Place the percolator on the heat source. A percolator is suitable for almost any kind of heat source, just not induction. Do not set the heat too high and keep an eye on the percolator.
  • Keep an eye on the percolator. You will notice that over time coffee will seep into the upper part of the percolator. When this stops, the water has run out. You will notice this by the coffee bubbles coming out.
  • Remove the percolator from the heat source. The coffee is now ready to be poured!

Enjoy your cup of fresh coffee!

TIP: The percolator cannot go in the dishwasher, rinse it immediately after use and clean it easily that way!
