To brew coffee with a cafetière, you use coarse grinds. Because they make coffee with a sieve pressed down, the coffee should not be too fine. Fine grind, for example, is not suitable for a cafetière. For this you better use a percolator to make an espresso. Also, medium grind is not suitable for a cafetière, also called the quick filter grind.
