What is a PVD coating?

PVD-coating (Physical Vapor Deposition) is a very modern technique that can be used, among other things, on parts of a cutlery set. This process uses condensation of atoms or molecules from a gas or vapor. This creates a wafer-thin layer that is only one to three micrometers thick. This layer increases corrosion and scratch resistance, but it also has visual benefits. For example, a black, gold or anthracite color can be imparted to stainless steel products.

Why a PVD coating?

By coating cutlery parts - or other items - with a thin PVD coating, they become much more resistant to external scratches. It also makes them better protected against corrosion. This is a chemical process in which materials, mainly metals, are corroded by electrochemical reactions. Note! Corrosion is different from when an object starts to rust. This is because it is caused by a reaction between the surface with atmospheric oxygen combined with moisture or water. Rust can be recognized by the brown layer of iron oxide that forms on the object. Finally, cutlery can be produced in multiple colors using a PVD coating. These colors do not fade!

Maintenance instructions PVD-coating

Have you just purchased PVD-coated cutlery? Then always hand wash your cutlery before using it for the first time. PVD-coated cutlery can in principle also be used in the dishwasher, but to keep the cutlery beautiful for a longer period of time it is better not to do this.

Would you still like to wash your cutlery in the dishwasher? Then keep the following points in mind:

  • Avoid using products that contain soda. Rather, use detergents with a phosphate content of 3% or lower
  • Do not wash cutlery at temperatures higher than 40 °C.
  • Dry the cutlery with a soft cloth. This will prevent stains
  • Separate knives, spoons and forks from each other in the cutlery basket to avoid 'contact corrosion'
  • Rinse food residue off cutlery before washing in the dishwasher
