It is no secret that Italy has many famous designers. The Milanese Alessandro Mendini is one of them! Mendini has played a major role in the development of Italian design. In 1979, he started working for the Alchimia studio, where he collaborated with other big names such as Ettore Sottsass and Michele de Lucchi. He worked here until he founded the design studio Atelier Mendini with his brother Francesco in 1988.
In the Netherlands, too, Mendini has done his bit in the field of architecture. For instance, he designed the new building of the Groninger Museum, which was festively opened in 1994 by the then Queen Beatrix. In addition, he helped design the Paradise Tower in Hiroshima and the Ceramic Museum in Incheon, among other things.
Mendini has also worked with the Italian company Alessi. Among other things, he designed beautiful percolators and corkscrews for them.
Alessi is an Italian brand founded in 1921. The extensive range consists of tableware, kitchen accessories, bakeware, wine accessories and household items. Each product is special because of its own design. Each object should move people, convey emotions, evoke memories, surprise and go against the general thinking.
In recent decades, Alessi has also included many other materials in their catalog, such as wood, porcelain, glass and plastic. The products are made in such a way that there is a balance between aesthetics, functionality and quality.
