What is the difference between slow cooker and crockpot?

This question can be a bit confusing since they are actually the same thing. Crock-pot is a brand from America that makes slow cookers, this brand is part of the Jarden Corporation, where KitchenAid also part of.

Here in the Netherlands we do use the term slowcooker more often, but it has become a synonym. When this happens it is called brand dilution, think for example of the same brand dilution as with: Tikkie, Frisbee, Chocomel and Luxaflex.

What a is a slow cooker?

A slowcooker goes to work for you when you are not there yourself, convenient right? It is an electric pan that slowly cooks your food, perfect for making food extra tender or letting the flavor soak in better. Remember that the "slow" in slow cooker does really apply, on average it takes up to six to eight hours. So don't expect to have a meal on the table half an hour later. However, it is perfect to start cooking in the morning and then do other things during the day, and at the end of the day you will have a delicious stew.

What is a crockpot?

Crock-Pot is a brand that makes slow cookers. So every Crock-Pot is a slowcooker, but not every slowcooker is a Crock-Pot! These days we use both terms for the same product, but handy to name so you don't get confused. Many Crock-Pot models have a handy digital screen so you can easily see an overview. In addition to slow cookers, Crock-Pot also has other kitchen equipment such as a rice cooker.

Hoe gebruik je een slowcooker?

Een slowcooker werkt verrassend eenvoudig. Je doet alle ingrediënten erin, zet ’m aan en wacht rustig af.

Stap voor stap:
1. Voeg je ingrediënten toe (meestal geen voorbakken nodig)
2. Kies een programma: laag (6-8 uur) of hoog (3-5 uur)
3. Sluit de deksel, laat ‘m z’n werk doen
4. Veel modellen schakelen automatisch over op warmhouden

📌 Let op: open de deksel tussendoor liever niet, dat verstoort het kookproces.

Wat is het verschil tussen slowcookers?

Niet elke slowcooker is hetzelfde. Afhankelijk van je gezinssituatie en hoe je kookt, kun je letten op:

– Inhoud: 3,5 liter is geschikt voor 1-2 personen, 5-6 liter voor gezinnen
– Functies: sommige modellen hebben ook een sautéfunctie (vooraf aanbakken), of warmhoudstand
– Binnenpan: keramisch is klassiek, aluminium is lichter en vaak geschikt voor inductie

Wat kun je allemaal maken in een slowcooker?
