Equipment

  • Cocktail glasses
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Paper towels

Ingredients

  • 400 g cooked shrimp (peeled)
  • 150 g iceberg lettuce
  • 1 lemon (in slices)
  • Paprika powder to taste
  • Fresh dill for garnish (optional)
  • For the cocktail sauce:
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp cognac or brandy
  • A few drops of Tabasco
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to make a classic shrimp cocktail?

    1. Make the cocktail sauce: mix the mayonnaise with the ketchup, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, the cognac and a few drops of Tabasco. Stir well and season with salt, pepper and a little lemon juice.
    2. Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. If they are not pre-cooked, cook them for 2 to 3 minutes in lightly salted water until they turn pink. Let cool.
    3. Cut the iceberg lettuce into thin strips. Arrange the lettuce as a bed at the bottom of the cocktail glasses.
    4. Spoon a generous spoonful of cocktail sauce over the lettuce in each glass.
    5. Divide the shrimp among the glasses. Place them loosely on top of the sauce so it looks appealing.
    6. Garnish each glass with a lemon slice on the rim, a sprinkle of paprika powder and optionally a small sprig of dill. Serve immediately or keep chilled until your guests sit down.

Presentation really makes a difference with this dish. Serve the shrimp cocktail in tall, elegant glasses and your guests will immediately feel the care that went into it. Add some extra lemon slices to the table and let everyone finish to taste.

Good glass, good dish. It's that simple. With the right glasses on the table you can serve this classic like a true chef. Choose glasses that feel sturdy and are nicely clear so the colours of the shrimp and sauce really stand out.
