Buttermilk in a cocktail? Yes, really. De Vanessa is proof that the simplest combinations are often the most delicious. Fifty percent buttermilk, fifty percent bitter lemon, a handful of ice cubes and you have a drink that tastes surprisingly fresh with just enough bite from the bitter lemon. Known from the golf course, loved by everyone who's ever tried it.

Want to make it a proper cocktail? Then pour a shot of vodka over the ice before adding the rest. Vodka is neutral, it almost disappears into the background and immediately gives the drink an adult cocktail vibe. Want to go all out? Replace a small splash of vodka with Licor 43. The vanilla notes in this liqueur pair perfectly with the buttermilk and the citrus of the bitter lemon. The result tastes like a liquid split ice cream for adults, and who could say no to that? Serve it in style with a good set cocktailsets so every glass looks instantly polished.

Recipe

The Vanessa cocktail (with or without alcohol)

De Vanessa is the refreshing drink everyone knows from the golf course: buttermilk and bitter lemon over ice. Add a shot of vodka or Licor 43 and you have an adult cocktail that tastes like a liquid split ice cream.

Equipment

  • Highball glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Ice cube tray
  • Measuring cup or jigger
  • Carafe (for multiple people)

Ingredients

  • 1 cl Licor 43 (optional, as a substitute for a splash of vodka)
  • 1 lemon slice for garnish (optional)
  • 125 ml bitter lemon (cold)
  • 125 ml buttermilk (cold)
  • 3 cl vodka (optional, for the cocktail version)
  • Handful of large ice cubes

How do you make the De Vanessa cocktail?

    1. Make your ice cubes ahead of time using an ice cube tray. Large cubes melt more slowly and dilute your cocktail less, so they're ideal.
    2. Fill a highball glass generously with ice cubes.
    3. Want a cocktail? Pour a shot of vodka (about 3 cl) over the ice now. Want to really treat yourself? Use 3 cl Licor 43 for that vanilla note.
    4. Then pour in the bitter lemon, well chilled and straight from the fridge. Fill the glass halfway.
    5. Top up the rest of the glass with cold buttermilk. Make sure the ratio of buttermilk to bitter lemon is roughly fifty-fifty.
    6. Stir gently but thoroughly with a long bar spoon so everything mixes well without breaking all the carbonation.
    7. Garnish optionally with a slice of lemon and serve immediately. Cheers!

De Vanessa is proof that you don't need a fancy cocktail bar to impress. Two ingredients, some ice and the right tools are all you need. Making several glasses at once? Mix the buttermilk and bitter lemon in advance in a nice carafe and set it on the table so everyone can pour themselves. Hospitable, no-nonsense and guaranteed tasty.

A good cocktail set makes the difference between just pouring something and creating a moment. With large ice cubes, a stylish glass and a long bar spoon, even the simplest drink looks well presented. And that's exactly what a relaxed summer evening with friends needs: quality you can see and taste, without the fuss.
