How to Season a Blackwell Cast Iron Pan – Step by Step
Bought a new Blackwell cast iron pan? You’ll need to season it before you cook with it. This process creates a natural non-stick surface and protects your pan from rust. Follow these steps to get your pan perfectly ready for use:
Why season a cast iron pan? Seasoning creates a non-stick coating that prevents rust and sticking. It also improves heat distribution and retention, which means dishes cook more evenly. The more often you season, the stronger the protective layer becomes and the longer your pan will last.
Step 1: Cleaning
Wash the pan thoroughly with warm water, a little dishwashing liquid and a scouring pad. Clean the inside, bottom and handle well. Rinse everything afterwards.
Step 2: Dry thoroughly
Dry the pan immediately with a clean, lint-free cloth. If necessary, place the pan on low heat for 10 minutes to evaporate the last bit of moisture.
Stap 2: Goed Drogen
Droog de pan direct af met een schone, pluisvrije doek. Zet de pan eventueel 10 minuten op laag vuur om het laatste restje vocht te verdampen.
Step 4: In the oven or on the stove
Oven Method: Preheat the oven to 250°C. Place the pan upside down on a baking rack (if necessary, place a baking sheet underneath to catch any drips). Place the pan in the oven for 60 minutes. Then carefully remove the pan using oven gloves and turn the oven off. Stovetop Method: Place the pan on the gas hob – use a small burner for a small pan and a large burner for a large pan. Heat the pan until it starts to smoke. Then let the pan smoke for a further minute and then turn the gas off. Please note: As the seasoning process occurs, there will be an odour – this is completely normal. Ensure good ventilation by turning on the extractor fan or opening a window. Cooling: Allow the pan to cool completely before storing or using.
Your pan is now ready to use!
With proper maintenance, your cast iron pan will only get better. Do you want an even stronger non-stick layer? Then you can repeat the seasoning process several times. Each additional layer makes the pan darker, smoother and better protected against rust.
