The classic Old Fashioned is one of myall timefavourites: it's sophisticated, bold and the kind of cocktail you savour with every sip. On top of that, it's about the easiest cocktail you can make — you just need to stir slowly and patiently for the best result.

Recipe

Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is a timeless cocktail you can make at home in just a few minutes. With rye whisky or bourbon, sugar and Angostura bitters, you conjure an elegant, slightly syrupy drink right in your glass.

Equipment

  • A tumbler glass with straight sides and a thick base
  • bar spoon and/or muddler

Ingredients

  • 50 ml rye whisky or bourbon
  • 1 sugar cube or 10 ml sugar syrup
  • 3 to 5 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • A few large ice cubes
  • Garnish: an orange slice / orange zest

Old Fashioned

    1. Start with the sugar cube or sugar syrup in the centre of the glass.

    2. Add the drops of Angostura bitters and just a tiny splash of orange juice (watch out for the pips).

    3. Stir until all the ingredients are combined. Then add the ice and the whisky: the choice is entirely yours, but a bourbon or rye whisky is the classic pairing.

    4. Slowly stir in circles with the bar spoon. This allows a little water to blend into the drink, creating a wonderful, slightly syrupy texture.

    5. Garnish with a piece of orange zest and cheers!

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest cocktails in the world, made since the nineteenth century. Its secret lies in simplicity: few ingredients, but good ones. Choose a bourbon or rye whisky you genuinely enjoy, because that flavour is front and centre in this drink.

Opt for large ice cubes — they melt more slowly than small ones, keeping your cocktail nicely cold without diluting it too much. A wide, low glass is ideal for serving the Old Fashioned at its best.
