It seems Nutella has been totally hot lately: you see it everywhere and the hashtag #nutella has been used on Instagram more than 6 million (!!) times. I actually never kept it at home until I received a gigantic jar of Nutella that looks like a penguin for the holidays. Honestly: it stayed sealed for months. But when it was opened a few weeks ago the floodgates opened: that stuff is just really tasty! I'm not exactly a hipster but I have to admit I caved to this hype too 😉 When I discover something delicious I want to share it, and that's exactly what I'm doing with this fantastic, super easy-to-make Nutella-pecan-coconut braid.

  • a generous handful of coconut flakes (or shavings)

Nutella puff pastry braids with pecan

    1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.

    2. It's handy to use a cutting board that doesn't stick too much when braiding the pastry. Let the puff pastry thaw briefly and then place the sheets with the sticky side down on the board. On each side, make about 4 to 5 cuts, but leave about 3 centimetres free in the middle. Spread a generous amount of Nutella down the center and place 3 pecans on top. Finish with some coconut flakes. Now let's braid! Take the top right strip and lay it diagonally down over the filling. Do the same on the left, then right, left, until a kind of braid forms. Tuck the last fold slightly inward. So it looks like a braid, but you're basically just laying strips of puff pastry over each other.

    3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and carefully place the braids on it. Now they go into the oven for about 10 minutes. Check afterwards: are they still pale? Then leave them in a little longer. Are they nicely golden brown? Then your delicious chocolate braids are ready!

These braids are delightful warm from the oven, but also very tasty at room temperature. Serve them as a snack, dessert or with a cup of coffee or tea.

Feel free to vary the filling: replace the pecans with walnuts or hazelnuts, or use grated coconut instead of coconut flakes. That way you can make a different version every time!
