Five ingredients, one fantastic pizza. The Margherita is proof that you don't need complicated toppings to put something delicious on the table. Use a good pizza stone for this, as it distributes heat evenly so your base gets beautifully crispy on the bottom. Preheat it well, roll your dough thin, and enjoy a pizza that could have come straight from Naples.

Preparation time

Preparation time 15 min
Time in oven 8 min
Total 23 min (plus 45 min preheating pizza stone)

Equipment

  • Pizza stone
  • Pizza peel
  • Rolling pin
  • Oven
  • Cutting board
  • Pizza cutter

Ingredients

  • 1 pizza base (ready-made, or homemade dough)
  • 3 tablespoons tomato sauce
  • 100 grams mozzarella, sliced
  • 5 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

How do you make a 5-Ingredient Margherita?

    1. Preheat the oven until the pizza stone is smoking hot or at its maximum setting (about 10–15 minutes).

    2. Roll out the base on a lightly floured pizza peel.

    3. Spread the tomato sauce and mozzarella over the base.

    4. Slide the pizza off the peel and into the oven in one smooth motion.

    5. Bake for 60 to 90 seconds, rotating the pizza 180 degrees halfway through for even baking.

    6. Scatter the basil leaves and drizzle with olive oil immediately after baking.

The strength of a Margherita lies in the quality of your ingredients. Choose a good passata and real mozzarella di bufala and you won't need any toppings at all. Less fuss, more flavour. That's the Italian philosophy, and it simply works.

A pizza stone is the key to a truly crispy base. The stone absorbs moisture from the dough while baking it from the bottom at the same time. That's what gives you that distinctive texture you know from a pizzeria. Got a pizza peel at home too? Then you can slide your pizza onto and off the stone effortlessly, without any fuss.
