25 January 1894 was the day that Aino Aalto was born in the Finnish capital Helsinki. Although the name may not have meant anything at the time, today she is a world-famous designer. Aalto studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology, graduating at the age of 26. Four years later, in 1924, she was hired by the architect Alvar Aalto to work for him. Aino and Alvar fell in love and married that same year, followed by a beautiful honeymoon in Italy.
In 1935, Aalto founded the Artek brand together with her husband. They sold textiles, furniture and glass, among other things. In 2005, this company was merged with Iittala. Aalto had been familiar with this brand for a long time. In 1932, the Iittala Aino Aalto glasses with the well known circles came on the market. These circles stand for the circles that are formed in a water surface when you throw stones into it. For this collection, she received a gold medal at the Milan Triennial in 1936.
Since 1881, Iittala has strived to provide inspiration for a more beautiful and enjoyable life. The Iittala range consists of tableware and decoration and has a good combination of distinction and functionality.
What once began as a glass factory in the Finnish village of Iittala has developed into an internationally renowned brand that has played a decisive role in defining the Scandinavian lifestyle. The brand's philosophy is that quality never goes out of fashion.
